"THE BEGINNING "
THE VERY FIRST CENTRE
IN GERMANY
The unique British Club Centre Franchise is the result of the effort and
hard work of the Englishman, Barrington Roy Schiller (Barry) who was
lecturing on English and International Transcultural Business Studies in
West Berlin in 1979. he founded and implemented the concept to give
German and English people an opportunity to improve their speaking
abilities and meet each other as well as to meet the British through
"conversation evenings under the motto "Peace through Understanding".
Barry's conversation evenings took this idea, of breaking down barriers
and became a success with an official membership from the Baltics to the
Balkans long before the break up of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. He
foresaw the growth in the use of English internationally for business
and commerce and opened the first "BRITISH CENTRE" in Brunswick, Germany
in 1979 From this grew The original "BRITISH CENTRE" Franchise, an
English language oriented business, comprehensively exploiting the happy
fact that English is now universally seen as the world's lingua franca
in business and commerce, in politics and economics.
Since 1976, the Club has conducted successful language courses for young people and recognised educational trips for adults in England. The participants of these courses stay with carefully chosen British families, have daily English lessons and can take part in interesting excursions and tours and provided a translation service, courses for local firms, a fully-equipped office ,let on a half-.day basis and a conference room.
The Centre was commended by the then British Consulate, Mr. K.L. Mason, and over a period of time several British companies enquired whether the Club could assist them in the marketing of their products. Based on this a DB was created so that a cross reference of British products or companies can be made with local markets and vice versa.
British Centre quickly became a clearing house for
au-pair positions, friends in England, DVDs and books in the English language, good tutors, accommodation with English host families and general information about holiday spots and reasonably priced accommodation in the UK
First hand information about the world of business with English speaking Countries was also available.
British Centre became a synonym for all these services as well as for classrooms in which English is taught in a relaxed atmosphere. Courses for adults, special courses for housewives and senior citizens, beginners and advanced courses, and tutoring, for pupils as well as the opportunity of speaking English over a beer or a cup of tea. For the teenagers there was a talk-show, and English teachers had a Teachers' Circle, where they could share their experiences. Groups were formed to present English plays, lectures were given, English language films were shown, or if the visitors just wanted to watch English television, the UK T.V. programme could be watched at the British Centre.
